Preventing the Flu with Fitness

The shortage of influenza vaccine has made headlines all over the nation, prompting long lines at health departments and drug stores, and even leading to Congressional hearings. While the vaccine is helpful – especially for those with serious health problems – most people can significantly improve their chances of staying healthy during flu season with exercise and nutrition. Unfortunately, this preventative angle hasn’t been getting much publicity.

The concept is simple: in order for your immune system to work, you have to move. This isn’t a far-out concept, it is medically-recognized fact. One of the reasons health care providers try to get patients moving as soon as possible after surgery is to stimulate immune response and decrease the chance of infection. The same principle applies to preventing the flu. If you engage in a daily exercise routine and get the proper amount of vitamins, you have a significantly reduced chance of getting the flu.

Movement is crucial to staving off illness. While we have a pump to get blood through the circulatory system – the heart – there is no pump for the lymphatic system, which provides a crucial line of defense against infection by carrying lymph fluid throughout the body. The only way to move the lymph fluid through the body is to move - contracting your muscles and compressing parts of the lymphatic system. This action, analogous to squeezing toothpaste out of the tube, is what moves the lymph fluid throughout the body.

On the nutritional front, it is also important to increase your intake of Vitamin C. Two important components of your body’s immune system are cholesterol and Vitamin C. (This does not mean you should go wolf down a couple of Big Macs and a glass of orange juice! Your liver makes plenty of cholesterol -- just add the Vitamin C.)

In summary, exercise is a very effective way to strengthen the immune system. Combine it with a plentiful supply of Vitamin C in your diet and you will decrease your chances of catching the flu…even without the flu shot.

Ernest's results

Eric, thanks for all the great advice. I just wrote a press release on preventing the flu with fitness. It worked great, I got two interviews on my local news and an article in my newspaper. I also got my article in a local health magazine. I am attaching the press release, maybe it can help some other trainers.

Golf Fitness Coach Warns Golfers AGAINST Yoga and Pilates

The resurgence of the so-called mind/body exercise regimes such as yoga and Pilates have filtered their way into many athletes’ training programs in the hopes of improving their athletic performance. Bill Hartman, physical therapist, sports performance coach, and owner of www.yourgolffitnesscoach.com, says it may be one of the biggest mistakes athletes, especially golfers, could make.

“Golf demands a high degree of dynamic flexibility performed explosively at very high speeds. Activities like yoga or Pilates don’t address these demands and can even be destructive to the function of the muscles and tendons,” says Hartman. “In high-speed activities like golf, the tendons function like springs or rubber bands to produce club-head speed. The slower, more passive flexibility training in yoga and Pilates robs golfers of the elasticity that they need to drive the golf ball to the best of their ability and to conserve energy.” Hartman utilizes a series of dynamic stretches and strength training exercises specifically designed to help golfers achieve optimal flexibility and improve their on-course performance.

Bill Hartman has been featured on a number of websites world-wide that include audio interviews outlining his cutting-edge methods and original articles covering all aspects of proper physical preparation for golfers. Bill has helped golfers of all levels; all over the world improve their golf abilities. Bill’s website, www.yourgolffitnesscoach.com, offers FREE information and golf-specific training programs.

Bill’s Results

Applying what I learned from "The Ultimate Program" I sent out my press release last week as usual. I tested the waters with www.Imediafax.com (my time has been limited). It did allow me to target a lot of golf-related publications and I got 360 releases for $50. I've attached the release for your assessment.

Anyway, less than 24 hours after the release went out I got a call from a writer from Golf World Magazine and ended up doing a phone interview right then and there!

Next day I got an email from a writer at Golf Week Magazine requesting an interview. I just completed the 45 minute interview today for an article highlighting yours truly due to come out the week before the Masters Tournament!

To Say that we're (the CFO/wife and me) excited is an understatement.

It's time to raise the rates!! ;)

By the way, I also have seminars scheduled for Little Rock, AR, Los Angeles, CA, and Somewhere in Wisconsin (??) already set-up for this year. When the article in Golf Week comes out...look out! It will be marketing city. I may be setting up a consult with you to really crank up the publicity.

Eric, you provided the foundation from which I make a great deal of decisions regarding how my business is presented and marketed. Thank you.

Effort is Everything!
